Success
How do YOU define success?
I asked a couple groups of students this question this morning while I was out on yard duty supervision before school.
From a group of adolescent boys, I received nervous laughter and confusion until I offered a few examples as prompts. Then I heard “to become a professional athlete” and “to make it big in the music industry.” From a group of young girls there was more nervous laughter followed by these answers “having good grades, becoming a doctor, having a big building with my brand on it…”

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about my definition of success.  I know it includes having peace of mind and a career that is rewarding beyond a paycheck because it impacts people’s lives in a positive way.  Most importantly though, my life is a success in my mind— IF it is Christ-centered as I pray daily for God to grant me the knowledge of His will for my life and the power to carry it out, one step at a time.

This peaceful portrait above was taken this morning at a stop light as I felt the warmth of the sun on my face, surrounded in worship music by Tauren Wells as well as the other artists listed below…  feeling completely enveloped by the love of my savior, my Jesus. I fought hard to hold onto this feeling as exhausted before the work day even began; I battled the traffic for over an hour to successfully arrive at a short-staffed work place with all the demands included with this current reality.

Today, I GET TO sit in traffic and maintain my peace.  Today, I GET TO suit up and show up at a job I enjoy.  Today, I GET TO smile with my eyes and offer words of encouragement through a mask to students who desperately need to know they are LOVED.  This is SUCCESS!

THIS poem below is still framed and displayed on the wall in my childhood home:

The man is a success who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much; who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of children; who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who leaves the world better than he found it, whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem, or a rescued soul; who never lacked appreciation of earth's beauty or failed to express it; who looked for the best in others and gave the best he had.

Speak Life

by

Toby Mac

Some days, life feels perfect…

Look into the eyes of the brokenhearted—

Watch 'em come alive as soon

as you speak hope
, You speak love, you speak

You speak life…

Words from my lips as the arms of compassion

Mountains crumble with every syllable

Hope can live or die…

Lift your head a little higher

Spread the love like fire

Hope will fall like rain

Some days, life feels perfect

Give Me Your Eyes by Brandon Heath
Looked down from a broken sky

Traced out by the city lights
My world from a mile high
Best seat in the house tonight
Touch down on the cold black-top
Hold on for the sudden stop
Breathe in the familiar shock of confusion and chaos
All those people goin' somewhere, why have I never cared?
Give me Your eyes for just one second
Give me Your eyes so I can see
Everything that I keep missin'
Give Your love for humanity
Give me Your arms for the broken-hearted
The ones that are far beyond my reach
Give me Your heart for the ones forgotten
Give me Your eyes so I can see
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Step out on the busy street
See a girl and our eyes meet
Does her best to smile at me
To hide what's underneath
There's a man just to her right
Black suit and a bright red tie
Too ashamed to tell his wife he's out of work, he's buyin' time
All those people goin' somewhere, why have I never cared?
Give me Your eyes for just one second
Give me Your eyes so I can see
Everything that I keep missing
Give me Your love for humanity
Give me Your arms for the broken-hearted
The ones that are far beyond my reach
Give me Your heart for the ones forgotten
Give me Your eyes so I can see
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I've been there a million times
A couple million lives
Just movin' past me by
I swear, I never thought that I was wrong
But I wanna second glance
So give me a second chance
To see the way You've seen the people all along
Give me Your eyes for just one second
Give me Your eyes so I can see
Everything that I keep missin'
Give Your love for humanity
Give me Your arms for the broken-hearted
The ones that are far beyond my reach
Give me Your heart for the ones forgotten
Give me Your eyes so I can see
Give me Your eyes for just one second
(Lord, give me Your eyes) Give me Your eyes so I can see
Everything that I keep missing
That I keep missing (Keep missing)
Give me Your heart (Give me Your arms for the broken-hearted) for the broken-hearted
(The ones that are far beyond my reach)
Give me Your heart (Give me Your heart for the ones forgotten)
Lord, give me Your eyes (Give me Your eyes so I can see)
